Popular mesh router maker Eero has come out with an update today that will enable them to be used in Apple’s HomeKit ecosystem.
This will allow users to add the router in their Home app, and provides them with much more specific device control, notably restricting how much your HomeKit devices are allowed to communicate with the rest of your network.
To enable this on your Eero router, you will need to open the Eero iOS app, go to “Discover” and follow the instructions there.
Apple recommends that users remove and re-add their HomeKit devices after adding the HomeKit router to ensure a secure connection. Based on some users comments they have not had to actually do this, but it is unclear if those devices are on a less secure connection.
Network security is often neglected when adding smart home devices, especially WiFi enabled ones. Unless you are a very savvy user and have manually tinkered with your router settings on a per-device basis, having the HomeKit router will provide the vast majority of users a simple way of limiting network access.
There are three levels of network activity you can allow your Homekit devices to have:
- Restrict to Home: basically devices can only talk to other devices through Homekit, meaning no internet access at all.
- Automatic: default option that allows limited access to Homekit and other “connections recommended by its manufacturer”
- No Restriction: devices basically have free internet access
