Now that you’re all full from that delicious Thanksgiving meal, and your relatives are about to start arguing over nonsense, it’s time for you to step away and take a look at what deals you can secure this Black Friday to expand or even start your smart home.
It appears that Best Buy and Amazon are your two best contenders for discounts on Smart Home accessories and devices, but stores like Lowe’s and Kohl’s are matching Best Buy on some of these deals too, in case those stores are more convenient.
Without further waffling on, let’s get started.

The most common first step people take into the Smart Home world is some smart lighting. Philips Hue is the biggest name in the game, and for good reason. They have a huge list of products and accessories, and are very high quality. They typically have a high price, but that’s why you’re a smart shopper and you’re going to score yourself some deals.
There aren’t as many deals for Hue Lights this year like in years past. They mostly seem to be offering money off bundles, which can be good if you’re just looking to expand your setup, less so if you’re just starting out.
Best Buy has only one Hue deal, it is the color starter kit for just $129 (a $60 savings!). This comes with the Hue Hub, 3 A19 Color Bulbs, and a remote. This is perfect for the upcoming holidays to add some color and flair to your home.
If you’re not looking to dive into the Hue ecosystem, Lifx has some great deals on their lights as well all over the internets. The benefit to Lifx is that they don’t require a Hub, instead connecting directly to your WiFi. Perfect for adding some color to rooms. Both the Hue lights and Lifx work with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Homekit.
Additionally, LifX lights are able to do multi color light strips, and even multi color bulbs.
Sengled has been proving to a popular choice as well with smart lights. They have numerous deals right now over at Amazon. These bulb do require a hub, but their starter kits are very reasonably priced, and they work flawlessly with Alexa and Google Assistant.
The Sengled Color starter kit comes with two color lights and the hub for only $48 on Amazon.
Nanoleaf is also having a sale on their Aurora bundles for those that really like to spice things up!
Smart Switches / Dimmers
For those of you who are a bit more serious about the smart home game, you’ll know that Smart Switches are the way to go for a more widespread and permanent use. They require a little bit more involvement to set up but they are worth it.
We don’t often see discounts on Smart Dimmer Switches, but Best Buy luckily has a few deals for us.
First up is the gold standard, the Lutron Caseta. Their starter kit includes their Caseta Hub, Smart Dimmer, and Pico Remote, and is for sale for $80 ($20 savings) over at Amazon. It will work flawlessly with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Homekit.
If you just want to go with Z-wave switches for your home, both GE and Insteon have some discounts.
GE light smart dimmer switches are only $35 at Amazon. These are the second generation that are smaller than before, and easier than ever to setup. Generally highly regarded, and will easily connect to the SmartThings or Wink Hub.
Insteon dimmers and switches are great deals these days. Amazon has the Smart Switch or Dimmer for just $32. These switches are minimalist in design and will blend into any home, however they do require the Insteon Hub to connect to Alexa and Google Assistant.
Wemo has expanded their lineup of smart switches and dimmers as well. For those of you that want to keep things simple with WiFi, their Dimmer switch doesn’t require a Hub, and works with all three assistant platforms (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant). It’s only $39 on Amazon.
It’s getting cold, but that doesn’t mean you should be paying too much for your heating bill. Get a smart thermostat and keep the cost of your bills down this holiday season. The Ecobee and Nest are the two main Smart Thermostats, and both offer competitive features and pricing. Be sure to check with your local Utilities supplier for some localized rebates!
The Nest thermostat is $179 at Best Buy, a whopping $70 off. This is certainly one of the better deals out there. The less expensive Nest E is on sale for $99. Lowe’s has the same deal as Best Buy on the Nest 3rd gen thermostat, in case they’re more convenient.
Personally I prefer the Ecobee to the Nest, as it has a easier to use interface and also comes with a room sensor, so you can set various scenes and automations based on the temperature in a specific room.
Best Buy once again is the main contender in the Smart Lock department.
August also has their Pro lock that comes with the Connect bridge, for only $150 at Best Buy, almost 50% off!
Of course if you prefer to have full control over all your devices, you’ll want to go up to the Yale x Nest lock that includes a Nest hub and allows you to fully control your lock via the Nest app. These are $60 off, costing you $220.
August has the cheapest lock at $99, however it will require the August connect bridge to activate the smart features. It will however detect your phone and automatically unlock itself using August Sense when you come home.
Cameras / Doorbells
You definitely want to keep all your new stuff safe, and the easiest way to do that is to get some security cameras and doorbells that will keep an eye on everything while you’re not there.
The slightly better Ring Doorbell Pro comes with a free Echo Show 5, and costs $180 ($120 off). This deal is just at Amazon.
The Nest Hello Cam is also $80 off at Best Buy, costing only $150, for those of you that would like to build up your Nest ecosystem.
Amazon and Best Buy also has a great deal on the Arlo Pro 2 camera system, that is only $149, ($100 savings!). I personally have this system, and I love that i have 7 days of free cloud storage, so I don’t have to pay any additional monthly fees to watch my security footage.
Now you surely don’t want to have to control each of these smart devices with their own separate app, that would be a nightmare! So instead you’ll want to connect them all to a central hub, and you use that Hub app to control them all. The two most common Hubs are the Samsung SmartThings, and the Wink Hub.
Smart Speakers / Displays
Now that you’ve got your smart home kitted out, you don’t want to have to control it with your phone or remotes, you want to be able to yell across the room and have an AI smart speaker do all your bidding for you.
There are plenty of deals for all of the Echo and Google Home products, as well as the Facebook Portal, though I wouldn’t recommend that one.
It’s going to be hard to beat Amazon’s Echo lineup. Not only did they release about a thousand new devices a month ago, but they’re already discounting most of them this holiday season.
Echo Dot is available for $22, though this discount can also be found at Best Buy.
The 3rd gen Echo is $60. which is a great deal, and the new 2nd generation Echo Show can be had for $150 with a free Hue light.
You can take Alexa with you into the car with the Echo Auto, available for $30.
The best Google Home Mini deal is at Best Buy, where for $26 you get the Google Home Mini and a GE Smart Light.
If you’re looking for multiple, Best Buy is selling a 3-pack of Google Home Mini’s for $60.
The full sized Google Home is available for $50 at Best Buy, ($49 savings!)
The Nest Hub can be found for $80 at Best Buy, Kohls, Lowe’s and Target.
Networking and Misc.
You’re going to need a google WiFi network to make sure all these devices can connect seamlessly and not slow down your network.
Mesh networks have become super easy to set up and run, and there are several options to cover your whole house with WiFi.
Best Buy offers the Google Nest Wifi mesh system for $289, which comes with three devices, enough to cover a pretty big house.
Linksys has been a big name in networking longer than just about anyone else, and they also have a Mesh Wifi option. Starting at just $100 you can be sure you’ll have great WiFi speed everywhere.
Chromecast, Roku, and FireTV sticks are all on sale as well this year. They’re all about $20-$29 depending on if you want the full HD or 4K version. I would spring for the 4K version just because, though they’ve been known to be a bit slow when scrolling through menus in 4K.
There you have it! Enough smart home tech to fill your house and empty your wallet. Let us know what you’re buying and how you’re using it!
